Eshai Tea commissioned Landini Associates to design a two-storey store at ‘The Kitchens Robina’, the new food mecca on the Gold Coast.
Eshai Tea is a ‘specialtea’ maker, elevating tea to its art form, inviting customers to a sensory travel into tea cultures from the Far East to Indigenous Australia.
One of the most exciting design challenges was how to break the mould, move away from cultural clichés and bring to life a modern shell for traditional tea making.
The overall look and feel is raw and warm with subdued lighting, allying industrial and natural materials such as stone, metal mesh, concrete and plywood panels.
On Level 4, the shop features a signature element, ‘the Tea Library’, displaying from floor to ceiling the tea collections as well as selected accessories from travels around the world.
At the heart of the store is a long counter made for tea tasting. The bench includes a beautiful brass tap adding a sophisticated spark and a spice palette embedded into the stone to create different tea mixes.
The teahouse offers a multi-sensory journey into a world of flavours, a charming cacophony of colours, fragrances, tastes and textures.
The pared back beauty of the environment lets the food and beverage be the heroes. The transparent kitchen showcases the food making process, enticing shoppers to step in and activating the take away counter.
On Level 5 is a more intimate and moody space for tea ceremonies. Low seating solutions such as tatamis, mats, ottomans, rugs and beanbags bring a communal, multi-ethnic and egalitarian feeling.
